Germany: Moses heals two people suffering from the Biblical Egyptian plague of boils, as described in Exodus 9:8-9. Illustration from the Toggenburg Bible, 1411. The disease represented is generally believed to be a depiction of the Black Death. The location of bumps or blisters, however, is more consistent with smallpox (as the bubonic plague normally causes them only in the groin and in the armpits). The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, peaking in Europe between 1348 and 1350.
