Monte Alban. Zapotec Art. Temple of the dancers


Monte Alban is an archaeological site located 10 km from the city of Oaxaca , capital of the Mexican state of the same name. Monte Alban was long the seat of the dominant power in the region of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca. The old name of this city founded by the Zapotecs late Preclassic subject of discussions. According to some sources , the original name was Dani Baa. It is known, however, that the Mixtec knew the name of Yucucuí (Green Hill ) . Like most of the great Middle American cities, Monte Alban was a city with a multiethnic population. Throughout its history, the city maintained strong ties with other peoples of great importance in Mesoamerica , especially with Teotihuacan during the Early Classic . The city was abandoned by the elite and much of its population at the end of the Xoo Phase . However, the ceremonial enclosure that constitutes the whole of the archaeological site of Monte Alban was reused for the Mixtec during the Postclassic Period .
