USCGC Eastwind (WAGB-279) Antarctic, Operation Deep Freeze. The 6,515-ton U. S. Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind, with shuddering impact, sheers a path through ice-jammed McMurdo Sound for cargo ships heading for the main base at Hut Point during Antarctic Operation Deep Freeze 1967. Based in Boston, Mass., this was the ninth year that the 269 ft , icebreaker Eastwind participated with U. S. Naval Support Force for scientific stations in Antarctic since the first Deep Freeze operations began in 1955-56.
