Claudius aka Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (10 BC – AD 54) was Roman emperor from AD 41 to 54. Because he was afflicted with a limp and slight deafness due to sickness at a young age, he was excluded from public office. In 41AD, Caligula was assassinated in a conspiracy involving the Praetorian commander Cassius Chaerea and several senators. Following the murder, Claudius witnessed the guards execute several noblemen, including his friends and fled to the palace to hide where a Praetorian named Gratus found him behind a curtain and declared him imperator.
