Northern pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea). Sarracenia are carnivorous plants indigenous to North America, particularly Texas, the Great Lakes area and southeastern Canada. Pitcher plants lure insects with nectar. Once on the rim of the plant a waxy surface means that the insects cannot grip and fall into the elongated, tubular leaves. Inside the tubes is a mixture of enzymes, secreted by the plant, which digest the fallen insects.
