Fly proboscis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the proboscis (snout) of an unidentified fly (order Diptera). Flies possess mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking. Most feed on plant juices or suck the blood of mammals. The tip of the proboscis in some flies has these two spongy labella (outer surfaces seen down far right and left), used to soak up liquids.
