1911 monochrome postcard view promenade with Edwardian people towards Central Pier with pavilion, Morecambe, Lancashire, UK

Construction of Morecambe's Central Pier began in 1868. At a cost of £10,000 it opened in March 1869. It was lengthened in the early 1870s at a cost of £5000. A jetty at the end of the 278m long structure was used by pleasure steamers until 1914. In 1897-98 a pavilion (seen here) was added. Described as the 'Taj Mahal of the North', it burnt down in July 1933. After further fires and partial collapse in the 1980s, the pier was condemned in 1991 and demolished in 1992. Morecambe's West End Pier, partly washed away by a storm in 1977, was demolished in 1978. The postcard, titled 'Promenade and Pier, Morecambe', bears a green half-penny Edward V11 stamp and the postmark 20 September 1911. Photographer and publisher unknown.
