This illustration shows Lamoignon de Malesherbes, counsel for King XVI at his trial in 1793. Guillaume-Chretien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (1721 –1794), was a French statesman and minister in France and later counsel for the defense of Louis XVI. Despite his committed monarchism, his writings contributed to the development of liberalism during the French Age of Enlightenment. He was Minister (Secretary) of State from 1776 to 1788.
