Along with Wen-chang, Chui-i and Kwan-ti, Kw'ei-sing was one of the four Gods of literature in Chinese religious mythology. Noted for his ugliness, as the God of Examinations, he is prayed to by scholars taking the Imperial Examinations. In this one of many interpretations he holds a brush aloft in his right hand and the imperial seal in his left after being rescued form a watery grave by the Ngao, the fabulous sea monster.
