The Martyrdom of St Hippolytus by Hans Canon. Antipope Saint Hippolytus was actve from AD222 to AD235. He was was probably the leader of an alternative group in opposition to the official pope (which was Urban I at theis time). According to various accounts he was martyred by beheading or being pulled apart by horses.
