Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of the mature wood of Arucaria augustifolia, known as the candelabra tree or Brazilian, or Parana, pine

Polarised light micrograph of a radial section of the mature wood of Arucaria augustifolia, known as the candelabra tree or Brazilian, or Parana, pine, although it is not a true pine but belongs to the genus Arucaria. The tree is on the critically endangered list as a result of logging and consumption of its fruit and seeds. Its numbers have been reduced by 97% in the last 100 years. Tracheids with circular bordered pits are seen running vertically and medullary rays are seen running horizontally. Magnification: x102 at 10cm wide.
