A lychgate, also spelled lichgate, lycugate, or as two separate words lych gate, (from Old English lic, corpse) is a gateway covered with a roof found at the traditional entrance to a (British) churchyard. St Mary's, Harrow on the Hill is the Borough and Parish Church at Harrow on the Hill. It was consecrated by St Anselm in 1094. The Church is at the top of the Hill and views towards Central London and most other directions can be seen from the Churchyard. Notable buildings that can be seen are the buildings of Canary Wharf, and the BT Tower in Warren Street, both some ten miles away from Harrow, and Wembley Stadium. Lord Byron was a frequent visitor, since he was at School nearby from 1801 to 1805, and he sat dreaming by "his favourite tombstone". The church is often the icon of Harrow and can be seen from miles. In more recent years, it is used as a navigational reference for aircraft approaching RAF Northolt.
