Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (Leyden, July 15, 1606 - Amsterdam, October 4, 1669) was a Dutch painter, etcher and draftsman. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and etchers in European art, and the most important Dutch master of the 17th century. Rembrandt produced a total of about three hundred paintings, etchings and two thousand three hundred drawings. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was in 1606 or 1607 in Leiden on July 15 born in the Weddesteeg, ninth child of Harmen Gerritsz van Rijn, a miller, and Neeltgen Willemsdr. of Zuytbrouck, a wealthy baker's daughter. The couple had a total of ten children, three of whom died young. [2] His father was a miller from the now defunct mill The Rhine. He attended Latin school and was almost 14 years old by his parents enrolled at the University of Leiden. Probably kept it at that, because knowing Rembrandt indicated that he would rather be a painter. From 1619 to 1622 he was apprenticed to the Leiden history painter Jacob van Swanenburgh.
