India/France: A French fort in Yanaon (now Yanam), a town in the Godavari River Delta, French India. Engraving by Louis Le Breton (1818-1866), 1857. Yanaon was one of the five main settlements of French India from 1731 until its incorporation into an independent India in 1954. French India was a French colony consisting of five geographically separated enclaves primarily on the eastern coast of the Indian subcontinent: Pondicherry, Karikal, Yanam, Mahe and Chandernagor. Initially these enclaves had been factories of the French East India Company.
