'I say the critic must keep out of the region of immediate practice', 1871. A caricature of Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), English poet, critic and educationalist. Arnold was a poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the famed headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator.
