Malaria parasite protease, illustration

Illustration of the protease plasmepsin X from the malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax. Proteases are enzymes that break down proteins. This protease is essential for the release of the merozoite stage of the parasite from red blood cells. Inhibitors of plasmepsin X are being studied as potential anti-malaria drugs.
