Panama Canal site, prior to construction. A section of the malaria mosquito infested area that became the Panama Canal that connected the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The earliest mention of a proposed canal here was in 1534. Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, ordered a survey for a sea route from coast to coast through the Americas. Various attempts were made over the years until 1904–1914 when the USA constructed a viable route. Many labourers involved in construction died of malaria .The first ship to pass through the canal was the SS Ancon, on 15 August 1914
