B-Z junction in DNA, molecular model. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) occurs in three forms, A-DNA, B-DNA and Z-DNA. The first two are right-handed, with B-DNA being the more common form. Z-DNA is left-handed, and a higher energy form of the DNA double helix. It forms from the lower energy states, and then relaxes back to B-DNA. During the transformation stages, junctions occur between the two forms, as shown here.
