Close-up of the "sharklet" or winglet (upturned wingtip extension) on an Airbus A320 narrowbody passenger jet

Winglets have been in use on commercial passenger jets since the 1990s. They regulate the airflow over the wingtips in a way that reduces drag and fuel consumption and extends aircraft range. 'Sharklet' is the term used by Airbus to describe the winglets introduced on its A320 family of aircraft as from 2013. Note: sharklets should not be confused with the small triangular wingtip fences previously used on Airbus aircraft.
