The Last Indian XC

The last surviving Indian Railway’s XC Class Pacific , built by the Vulcan Foundry in Lancashire in 1929. These handsome locomotives - designed in the mould of the Flying Scotsman - were the express passenger engines of British India and fifty years after their inception the last survivors eked out their final years operating workman’s passenger trains in and out of Calcutta and on heavy shunting duties at Burdwan. The engine depicted is seen being coaled by a fiery mobile steam crane at Burdwan prior to working the daily pick up freight to Bolpur the following morning, after which the engine was withdrawn from service and despatched to Jamalpur works for breaking up. The XC Class is now extinct. Picture dated March 1981.
