Low-level nuclear waste. Coloured X-ray of a barrel of equipment that is being disposed of after use in the nuclear industry. All components used in the nuclear fuel cycle must be disposed of properly, according to their level of radioactivity. This is low-level nuclear waste, which is only slightly radioactive. It is sorted and incinerated or melted down, and then stored in barrels or metal ingots. The X-raying is used to check the contents. This is the Centraco factory, in Marcoule, France. Photographed in 2004.
