An historic 1888 image of the the former largest Giant standing rock cut figure of Buddha at Bamian / Bamiyan / Bamyan, Afghanistan. This and the smaller statue were dynamited and destroyed in March 2001 by the Taliban, because (allegedly) they were declared as idols. The face in the picture is blank because the fine features modelled in clay had long since deteriorated. The indentations in the rocks are caves in which hermits once lived.
