The Haxey Hood taking place in the civil parish of Haxey , North Lincolnshire. The traditional game takes place every year on the twelfth day of Christmas. Dale SmithÊstarts the game by making his 'Smoking theÊFool' speech holding the hood as damp straw is lit underneath him. The Haxey Hood is a mass participation game that loosley resembles a rugby match. Instead of a ball, the players use 2 feet long leather tubes called hoods. The villagers of Haxey and neighbouring Westwoodside compete to get the hood inside their pub to score. The winnerÕs pub gets to keep the Hood until the following year. The games origins go back to the 14th century when Lady de Mowbray, wife of landowner, John De Mowbray, was out riding over the fields towards near Haxey. Her silk riding hood was blown away by the wind. Thirteen farm workers rushed to help and chased the hood all over the field.
