Petals united, corolla often globose, bell-shaped or tubular, deciduous. 23 genera with about 330 species, extending from the north temperate zone, in which several species have a wide circumpolar distribution, to the mountains of the tropics. Vaccinium, the largest genus, has about 100 sj)ecies, four of which are British; F. Myrtillus is the Bilberry and V. Oxycoccos the Cranberry. Epiphytes are frequent in tropical mountain genera, such as Thihaudia (South American Andes) and others. Subfamily IV. Ericoideae.
