Mechanical Heart, post-1919 The Electreat Mechanical Heart was an electrical nerve stimulator that claimed to cure a staggering range of conditions—from arthritis to asthma, to paralysis and deafness—by delivering an electrical pulse to the skin. In 1941, FDA successfully prosecuted a misbranding case against the device manufacturer for false and misleading labeling, securing one of its first convictions under the new medical device provision in the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
