The colony continued to flourish, and evenacquired a degree of local independence, but at the same time it wasactive in its hostility to British interests and commerce in the east. It wasaccordingly captured by a British expedition in i8io, and its cession wasformally acknowledged by the Treaty of Paris, when Reunion, whichhad also been taken, was restored to France. Thepresent government is that of a Crown Colony, theentire administration being vested in the Governor ;various modifications have, however, been effected atdifferent times, the most important being that of 1885,when a representative element was introduced.
