1923 Great Kanto earthquake. Rubble of destroyed and devastated buildings in Yokohama, Japan, following the Great Kanto earthquake of 1 September 1923. This earthquake had a magnitude of on the moment magnitude scale. It caused immense destruction in Tokyo, the port city of Yokohama, and the surrounding regions. It is thought to have caused over 142,000 deaths. These are the ruins of the Grand Hotel at Yokohama (see C020/0502). It was reported that this three-storey Victorian building collapsed and crushed hundreds inside. The ruins were engulfed by the fires that broke out in the area following the earthquake.
