Blackhall Colliery beach showing eroded layer of coal mining waste, County Durham coast, England, UK

The beaches between Blackhall Colliery and Seaham on the Durham coast were polluted by coal mining waste over many years, the last tipping occurring in the 1980s. The beaches are slowly recovering as the sea washes away the waste, but there are reminders of the region's industrial heritage all along the coast.
