The figures represented here are two Byzantines: Theodosius in 379 and his consort Aelia Flacilia. Theodosius I was chosen by the Emperor Gratian to rule the East as co-Augustus. He called the First Council of of Constantinople. His death left the Roman Empire permanently divided. The illustration dates to 1882.
