Between the pilasters of the door the frieze is combats are represented. In the first a Samnite hasbeen conquered by a Myrmillo. This last wishes to becomehis comrades executioner without waiting the answer fromthe people, to whom the vanquished has appealed; but thelanista checks his arm, from which it would seem that theSamnite obtained pardon. The following pair exhibits asimilar combat, in which the Myrmillo falls, stabbed to 238 POMPEII. death. The wounds, the blood, and the inside of thebucklers are painted of a very bright red colour. The. *3& swords, with the exception of that of Hyppolitus, areomitted ; it is possible that it was intended to make them ofmetal.
