The early 1900s caption reads: Turkish Troops Attack Cretan Insurgents. During the Cretan Insurrection of 1896, the Christians of Crete were obliged to retire to the mountains to escape the massacre by the Turkish troops. When, however, they were pursued into their wild retreats, they defeated the troops repeatedly. A glance at the picture will show you how impossible it was for the Turks to drive resolute men from these picturesque fortresses, amid rock and cliff.
