Galatea

This scene shows Galatea, who, in Greek mythology, was a sea nymph and daughter of Nereus and Doris, on the back of a Triton playing a lyre. On the Triton's tail is a Cupid playing a flute .To the right of the Triton is a nymph holding an amphora. The original was a wall painting found in the House of Ariadne in Pompeii, an Italian town destroyed in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79. Galatea's dress is held up by two cupids and, in the background, are two heads of figures that represent Zephyrs, the winds.
