An old engraving of an electric recording chronograph device of the mid-1800s. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. A chronograph is a type of clock or watch. Louis Moinet invented the chronograph in 1816 for use in tracking astronomical objects. It was developed by Francis Bashforth and John Locke. The recording apparatus shown here is similar to John Locke’s Electro-Chronograph – a paper-covered rotating cylinder and pen could record an event within hundredths of a second.

An old engraving of an electric recording chronograph device of the mid-1800s. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. A chronograph is a type of clock or watch. Complex chronographs can also measure seconds, minutes, hours and even tenths of a second. Louis Moinet invented the chronograph in 1816 for use in tracking astronomical objects. It was developed by scientist/engineers such as Francis Bashforth and John Locke. The recording apparatus shown here is similar to John Locke’s Electro-Chronograph – his paper-covered rotating cylinder with a pen, could record an event within hundredths of a second. This was a ten-fold improvement in accuracy over prior equipment.
