Bugle - Ajuga reptans, a low growing wild flower in grass

Ajuga reptans, also known as blue bugle, brown bugle or common bugle inhabits fertile meadows or grazing fields and damp woodland clearings. It's flowers can be pink, purple or blue and have a three lobed large lower lip marked with stripes. The two long stamens (there are also two shorter ones) resemble a pair of insect eyes. The plant is attractive to insects. The wild species is low growing and the spike is just 4 inches or 10cms tall. Taller cultivars are available and the plant has been given the RHS award of Garden Merit.
