Chateau de Versailles (Palace of Versailles), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, France -a section of the gilded railings to the front of the palace


First built by Louis XIII in 1624 as a hunting lodge of brick and stone, and designed by the architect Jacques Lemercier, the edifice was enlarged into a royal palace by Louis XIV, the self-styled Sun King. The palace is elaborately adjourned with artwork, gilded friezes and statuary.
