Dahlias are used for many other purposes, and are grown in many other forms with pleasing effect. Some train the tall varieties on trel- lises in espalier form; many train them to tall supports, while others spread them out on the ground and peg them fast, to give the appearance of a bed of large- flowering pigmies. The latter form is quite unique and satisfactory, as plants of some of the varieties grow un- usually well and bloom profusely. The Fancy Dahlia Uncertainty and Cactus Dahlia Delicata are typical varieties that seem to do better in this form than any other. Enemies.—Dahlias are generally remarkably free from enemies, but in some localities the tarnished plant bug (Lygus pratensis) makes success impossible, as there is no practical remedy. This bug is chiefly responsible for the blasted buds and one-sided
