Cloves. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a pair of cloves. These are the dried flower buds from the tree Syzygium aromaticum. A clove consists of the flower stalk (calyx, dark brown) which ends in four sepals and four unopened petals (dark yellow). Whole and powdered cloves are used as a spice in cooking and the aromatic oil, eugenol, extracted from the clove is used in baking, confections and some medicines as a flavouring. It is also employed as a dental analgesic. Magnification: when printed 10 centimetres wide.
