Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator, a descendant of the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family. Merian was one of the first European naturalists to observe insects directly. The illustration shows the title page to the artist's first major work, "Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandelung und sonderbare Blumennahrung" (Trans: The caterpillars' wonderful transformation and strange flower food)
