Colourful street scene with local man. Quiet daily living of the small and tranquil island-village of Mexcaltitán, Nayarit, Mexico, Jul 2019

Decreed as a Historic Monuments Zone in 1986, Mexcaltitán de Uribe is known for its picturesque tile-roofed homes and small tranquil streets. Although the population of Mexcaltitán is still only about 800 or so, the history of the island goes far back. Many historians consider it the birthplace of the Mexican identity, as the Mexicas originally departed from this island to find Tenochitlán, which eventually became Mexico City, the capital. As you walk through the brick streets of Mexcaltitan, you will notice the sidewalks as they oddly elevated two to four feet from the ground. During the rainy season, the surrounding swamp floods most of the streets and the locals use the raised sidewalks and small boats to get around in the village. This unique way of life has earned the city the playful nickname of "the Venice of Mexico". Shrimp fishing is the main occupation of the inhabitants.
