Toxodon, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal was a type of hoofed animal classed as a notoungulate. It was found in South America, and lived from around 11 million years ago up to 5000 years ago, from the Late Miocene to the Holocene. It was about metres long and metres high at the shoulder. It is thought that hunting by prehistoric humans may have hastened their extinction.
