Bakary Diarra is a master cotton farmer and harvested 36 5 tonnes of cotton in the 2001 02 growing season from Salia in the B l co region stands out Cotton is at an all time low world price It is the subsidies granted by northern countries especially the USA that are doing this Quarter of a million US cotton farmers received US 3 9 billion in subsidies in 2001 This is having a dire effect on cotton producing developing countries such as Mali where a third of the population are dependent on cotton for their income In the 2002 03 growing season Malian cotton farmers received just 18p per kg for their cotton whereas US farmers received 80p per kg
