The former town lock up used in past times for drunks in Burnley Lancashire behind the shopping centre is now used for storage

Burnley like many towns in the area was a town in earlier times full of coal mines, factories, foundries and cotton mills. It was full of hard men and women who worked in harsh, dangerous conditions from very young ages. The very air they breathed was thick and full of soot, cotton dust and contaminants which were dangerous to health. Public beer houses thrived so that people could wash their throats down with cheap beer which was safer for them to drink than the local water. Even children and babies were given weak or 'small' beer to drink as the brewing process purified the water. On payday inevitably some people drank too much and ended up in the lockup to sober people pass by this alley never knowing the history or seeing the jail tucked away down it
