Red K2 telephone box designed by Sir Gilbert Scott and Grade II listed in Whitechapel
The K2 telephone box was designed by the architect Giles Gilbert Scott in response to an open competition run by the General Post Office in 1929. Scott's design is said to have been influenced by the mausoleum designed by Sir John Soane is St Pancras Old Church graveyard which has a similarly shaped rounded cupola on top. The K2 was only manufactured in small numbers as it was felt too expensive - it consisted of cast iron sides and top and a solid teak (wooden) door. Although similar in shape it was the K6 which was a similar design by Scott in 1935 which went into mass production and is the most numerous throughout the UK.
