The Fall of Man engraving, Cranach, Germany, 1472 - 1515. Cranach, no doubt reflecting the patriarchal religious views of his day, genders the serpent with the armless upper body of a woman and the lower half that of a serpent. The embodiment of the 'Temptress'. Using a sharp steel tool called a burin, the artist first incised the outlines of his entire composition on a smooth copper plate. When the plate was inked only the shallow grooves cut by the burin would carry the ink. British Museum.
