Description of the Instrument made use of for the abovepurpose. This instrument, in its most simple form, consists of 1. A square prism or block of wood, about three incheslong, and l 1-2 on the side. 2. A wooden scale or index, about 8 inches long, l 1-2broad, and 1-4 thick. Along the flat sides of this scale, thereare drawn, by a carpenters gauge, three or four fine lines,parallel to the opposite edges of the scale.
