Gibraltar – 12th November 2014 – Pictured artifacts from the different eras found at the archaelogical site. The Gibraltar Museum and Heritage division today unveiled to the media the latest archaeological discovery at Casemates providing evidence of Gibraltar’s development since the 13th century. At a building site by the junction of Main Street to Crutchetts Ramp, just on the perimeter of Casemates Square a recent development of a building site has unearthed evidence of both Moorish and Spanish occupation of Gibraltar in the area. Kevin Lane, representing the heritage division, explained how a cistern and water well dating back to 16th Century Spanish occupation was bounded by a perimeter wall showing evidence of the destruction during the Great Siege of Gibraltar and the subsequent presence of British occupation. The site which has been opened for research by Admiral Bridge Investments Ltd, the developers of the site before construction proceeds will be archaeologically recorded and artefacts removed. Mr Lane Explained that future plans will allow for Archaeological investigations of sites before construction allowing the integration between the protection of heritage, archaeological research and development plans. Further remains of Moorish occupation have also been unearthed in the same site dating back to the 13th Century.
