bell tower of St Antoni Abat, Vilanova i la Geltrú

bell tower of St Antoni Abat. The first church was built between Vilanova 1363 and 1400, replacing an old Romanesque chapel. The bell tower did not begin until 1672 and was completed in 1706, and is the only one left standing in this old church, demolished in 1790 when he was replaced by the present church. This, of Baroque style, began in 1734 and was blessed in 1771, still unfinished. It has a basilica with three naves and chapels between the buttresses, semicircular chancel and ambulatory. The main facade is the work of Bernadette, Josep Oriol, 1877. It has four large columns supporting a pediment with plain entablature. There stands the sculpture of Sant Anthony Abbot, by Paul Carbonell. The temple is very damaged and later restored in 1936. The restoration of façade of the Plaza de las Nieves, quite controversial, was not completed until 1977.
