The remains of Smeaton’s Harbour, Winchelsea Beach, Rye.


The 18th century project to build a new harbour in Rye, was an expensive folly which turned into a financial catastrophe. It took 63 years to build, but was operational for only 4 months and was abandoned in November 1787, due to silting up.
