The soft serve ice cream outlets came on the scene with the founding of Tastee Freez restaurants that began in the early 1950s in Joliet, Illinois. Given its foundling location, being so close to Chicago, the area once hosted a very large number of locations. Today there only a handful of such restaurants in the Chicago area and country.
