Coast Guard Hero Receives Navy Cross. Coast Guard Invader Raymond J. Evans of Bryn Mawr, Wash., receives the Navy Cross for "extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations" from Rear Admiral Edward D. Jones, Coast Guard, at ceremonies held at the Coast Guard's Alameda, Calif., training station. Evans, a chief signalman, is 22 years old. He displayed his heroism in the evacuation by Coast Guardsmen of a Marine battalion trapped by the Japanese at Guadalcanal.
